Eating disorders can affect people of different cultures, ages, body sizes, and genders.  Although people tend to think of them as a way for someone to gain attention, they are actually a result of various factors coming together in a perfect storm. They are currently the mental health illness with the highest mortality rate. Recovery IS possible - please reach out.

 

The most common types of eating disorders:

    *Anorexia Nervosa

    *Bulimia Nervosa

    *Binge Eating (the fastest growing eating disorder)

    *Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

 

Recovery from an eating disorder is a long process which takes commitment and patience. Because of this, the client-therapist relationship needs to be one that you feel confident and comfortable with. I am willing to go with you as you take on the challenge. I feel that my knowledge in this area, along with personal experience, make me a good resource.

 

I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to look at your different patterns in thinking and behavior. We will work on problem solving skills and ways to reduce anxiety and improve depression.

I also like to utilize some Family Based Therapy (FBT), as an eating disorder involves the entire family.

Other professionals will be brought onboard, such as a nutritionist and medical provider. You will also be encouraged to join a support group, which can be a bit intimidating at first, but is actually a big help in your success. You may also need some medication to help with anxiety or depression, which often co-occur with eating disorders. Although you may expect all of the work to revolve around eating, it doesn’t. We will work on what is underneath the need to control things, self image, and more.

 

You may also feel that you have some food issues, but not a full-blown eating disorder. We can explore the area of disordered eating, which is typically improved in a shorter amount of time.
